Men & Armour for Gloucestershire in 1608

A fully searchable online database containing information on occupation, stature and age for nearly 20,000 men in Gloucestershire, UK, in 1608. Compiled by John Smyth, steward of the Berkeley Estate.

Gloucester Journal Extracts

This is an on-line and fully searchable version of the Gloucester Journal extracts compiled by the late Anthony Done. It covers the period from 9 April 1722 to 22 December 1899 and at present only Section D (Industry, Trade and Commerce) and Section E (Transport and Communications)are available.

Gloucestershire Population Tables 1801-1901

These are the National Census figures for towns, villages and sometimes hamlets in the county at 10 year intervals throughout the 19th century.

Historic Ordnance Survey and other Maps

The historic non OS maps includes several early 19th century large scale maps of Gloucestershire: Bryant 1824, Greenwood 1824 and Atkinson (Forest of Dean) 1847 plus the Coaley Inclosure Map.

A collection of more than 80 6-inch (1:10560) maps covers a significant part of the old county of Gloucestershire. They are a mix of the three editions (c.1881, c.1901 and c.1922).

Other OS maps (not 6-inch) include first edition 1-inch maps of Gloucestershire and Evesham, Worcestershire, and a 25-inch map of Stroud (part), 1901.

Industrial Archaeology

Industrial Gloucestershire 1904

Compiled, published and printed in 1904 by Chance and Bland, this 82 page, very well illustrated book provides a brief history and the current situation in 1904 for 100 Gloucestershire firms.

Hand-Loom Weavers Report

Royal Commission of Inquiry into the condition of the Hand-Loom Weavers in England and Wales (1837-41). The Gloucestershire Section by W. A. Miles is reproduced in full and is fully searchable.

Fred Rowbotham Image Collection

1300 images relating mainly to the River Severn and the Gloucester & Sharpness Canal. There is a search facility.

Brickmaking in Gloucestershire

A comprehensive account of Brickmaking in the County in about 1909. Also a history of the Stonehouse Brick & Tile Company.

Coaley Mills

There are three known mill sites in Coaley: Coaley Mill (corn, cloth and ironworks), an animal feed mill at Field Farm and a long vanished cloth mill, Moreacre Mill.
