These dwellings were built only a few years ago. They are in South
Street opposite the Prema Arts Centre (ST 789 983). The site had been
recently a builders yard but in the early 18th century it was a cloth factory
known as Dauncey's Factory.
In 1814 it was described as newly erected, 67.5 feet long, 20.5 feet wide
and five storeys high. There was a shed for a horse wheel to
power the machinery. Water power was of course unavailable as the
site was not on a watercourse. Therefore only very light machinery
could be operated.
The simple functional design of the block gives us an appropriate reminder
of the earlier use of the site for the cloth industry.
